Vijayanagar, Copper Cash of Devaraya I or II (1400-1450 AD), Tamilnadu series, unpublished in major publications, 3.51g. Obv: Elephant walking to right, Nagari letter 'Cha' above. Rev: Crude representation of Chola-style 'seated man', crescent and trident to right.
Very Fine+, Rare.
The coin is stylistically similar to the issues of Lakkana Dannayaka, governor of Madurai during the reign of the two Devarayas. The meaning of the letter 'Cha' is uncertain but its placement mimics the positioning of a ceremonial banner above the elephant's back.
