According to Jan Lingen's scholarly paper in JONS, attempts were made to introduce mechanised coin production in Hyderabad around 1894AD, with the first machine-struck coins, dated AH1312, being brought into circulation during that year. This coin, unlisted in any publications, proves that the attempts actually extended back to AH1294 or eighteen years prior to this. Several companies were interested in setting up machines at the Nizam's mint and attempts were also made to purchase machinery from the decommissioned British mint at Madras. This coin is a significant marker for the history of mechanised coin production in Princely India.
