Auction Date: 21-01-2017
Silver
Akbar (1556-1605), Silver Kori, mintless and dateless, with Allahu Akbar / Jalla Jalalahu legends on obverse and reverse, 4.67g.
Black deposit otherwise Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
Even though the coin does not bear a mint-name, the style of engraving and decoration make it absolutely certain that it must have been a product of Ahmedabad mint. Akbar's silver coins, struck to the local Kori / Mahmudi standards in local types are known from South Gujarat / Baglana and Kathiawad / Junagarh areas. However, this coin bears witness to the fact that Koris were also struck at the imperial mint in Ahmedabad; perhaps, their issue was prompted by demands arising from military campaigns in the mid-1590s which resulted in complete subjugation of Gujarat following the rebellion of Muzaffar III.
