Hindu Kings of Kashmir, Silver Dinar of Harsha Deva (c. 1089-1101 AD), 3.14g. Obv: King riding a horse, wearing angular headdress and holding spear, to right; legend in Śāradā script Shri Harsha (deva) above. Rev: Goddess seated facing on stylised lotus, holding lotus and vase in hands.
Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
According to Kalhaṇa's Rajatarangini, Harshadeva struck gold and silver coins, in addition to bronze, which he then distributed among his favourites and possibly to his army. In 2011, a small group of silver horseman type coins of Harshadeva, reportedly found near Gujaranwala in the north eastern Punjab (Pakistan). They were published by Joe Cribb and Mobin Ahmed, "The coins of the Kashmir king Harshadeva (AD 1089-1101) in the light of the 'Gujranwala' hoard," in Journal of the Oriental Numismatic Society, No. 208 (Summer 2011), pp. 28-33. So far, silver coins of this type are known only from this hoard, apart from a single coin in the British Museum, which is of gold.
