Samatata region, Anonymous Gold Dinar copying Gupta coin designs (c. 550-650 AD), unlisted in ECB, 6.01g. Obv: Stylised representation of a nimbate 'archer' type king, holding bow in one hand and arrow in the other, carrying a curvedbladed weapon tied to the waist; a 'Shankha' standard in the backdrop. Rev: Stylised female figure standing holding a balllike object in her hand; unread in the left field and a sigmoid symbol to the right.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
The coin falls between SAM2 and SAM3 as per Bose and Nasir's classification - like SAM2 it has a goddess with crude legend to right on reverse, but like SAM3 it bears a king standing with a 'Shankha' standard in the backdrop. However, no coin of the SAM3 type shows the king in a nimbate form. This coin is therefore most likely an important transitional issue bridging two types.
