Samatata region, Gold Dinar of Gopachandra, king of Vanga (c. 525-575 AD), in Eastern style, ECB SAM6.1, 5.67g. Obv: Stylised representation of a nimbate 'archer' type king, holding bow in one hand and arrow in the other, with a crudely executed 'Shankha' standard in the backdrop; Brahmi legend Gopa below the hand holding the bow. Rev: Stylised female figure standing holding a ball-like object in her hand, and curvilinear drapes behind her back; legend in the right field.
Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
According to Bose and Nasir, “Gopachandra was a powerful ruler of Vanga who had extended his kingdom up to the south-east and western parts of Bengal and Orissa.”
