Samatata region, Gold Dinar copying Gupta/Kushan designs (c. 400-500 AD), ECB SAM1E.1 (plate specimen), 6.75g. Obv: Nimbate king, wearing large earrings, standing holding a 'trident-battle-axe' standard and making a gesture of benevolence with extended hand; unread Brahmi legend around, possibly copied from Gupta coins. Rev: Nimbate male and female couple (Mithuna) standing in a gesture of reverence / offering; Brahmi legend Shri Jeyo in the left field.
Extremely Fine, Exceedingly Rare.
Although the coin remains unattributed at the moment, its typology is undoubtedly unique in ancient numismatics. It evidently follows a Gupta/Kushan trajectory, but the depiction of a Mithuna motif is rather innovative. Bose and Nasir have commented that it might have been inspired by the Gupta 'king and queen' type.
