Chalukya feudatories on Western Karnataka Coast, Gold Gadyana, 'boar'-type, (1000-1100AD), 4.60g. Obv: Boar standing right, with floral border and traces of Kannada legend above, enclosed in dotted border with pseud-Arabic inscriptions in the exergue. Rev: Dotted border enclosing a dynastic emblem of two larges leaves under a parasol.
Very Fine+, Very Rare.
Coins of this type have been attributed to Alupas treating the emblem on reverse as a 'pair of fish' symbol. The placement of pseudo-Arabic inscriptions is suggestive of trade contacts with the Islamic World which is an interesting feature.
