Western Kshatrapas, Kardamaka dynasty, Damasena I as Kshatrapa (227AD), Silver Drachm, dated SE149 2.06g. Obv: Profile bust of king facing right, Greek legend around and date behind the head. Rev: Dynastic emblem in centre; Brahmi legend Rajño Mahakshatrapasa Rudrasihasaputrasa (Rajño Kshatrapasa) Damasenasa, not listed in Fishman, ('Mint A').
Very Fine, Unique so far.
SE149 was the year in which Sanghadaman is known to have struck coins as a Mahakshatrapa, possibly owing to a short lived rebellion. There was as yet no numismatic evidence of Damasena being 'demoted' to the lower title of 'Kshatrapa'. This coin changes that – although the legend is partly off the flan, there seems to be no doubt, judging by the spacing of the letters, that the word after Rajño at 12 o'clock is Kshatrapa.
