Ancient India
Auction Date: 10-04-2016
Copper
Post-Mauryan Vidarbha-Marathwada, King Kutapada (150-100 BC), Copper Coin, 3.87g. Obv: Bold Nandipada and a circle; Brahmi legend Rano Kutapa… above flanked by Swastikas. Rev: Elephant walking to right, three-arched hill and Swastika above.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
Kutapada is a recently known 'new' post-Mauryan ruler of the Deccan. A number of his coins were offered by us in the Dakshinapatha-Pati Collection in our Auction 21. They belong to various types; however, this type was not represented in the selection offered in Auction 21. It represents a new and hitherto unknown type. Kutapada appears to have issued a fairly large number of coin-types which spread over a wide area in Marathwada and Vidarbha.
