Maratha Confederacy, domains of the Sindhias, Silver Rupee, Muminabad-Brindaban Mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH12XX/RY44, symbols of Trisul, Katar and a small ‘St. Stephen’s Cross’ on the reverse, variety not listed in M&W, 10.75 g.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
Maheshwari & Wiggins list many varieties with RY44, but not one with ‘St. Stephen’s Cross’. It is plausible that the coin is struck under the command of Cullier Perron, the French mercenary commander in service of the Sindhias, when he held large tract of the Sindhia’s domains across the Chambal River just before the 2nd Anglo-Maratha War.
