Sultans of Gujarat, Mahmud I 'Begada' (1458-1511 AD), Gold Tanka, Shahr-i-Mukarram Muhammadabad urf Champanir Mint, AH 902, G&G G78, 11.44g. Obv: al-Wathiq bi-Ta'yid al-Rahman Nasir al-Dunyawa'l din al-Fath within dotted circle. Rev: In circular border, Mahmud Shah al Sultan Khallada Khilafathau; Mint name and AH date in marginal legend.
Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
Mahmud I consolidated the Sultanate of Gujarat by winning over Saurashtra and becoming the master of two impregnable forts of the region - Champanir and Junagarh; hence the title 'Begada' ('Be' = two; 'Gad'/'Garh' = fort). Champanir was captured on 21st November 1484 after a siege lasting 20 months and Mahmud spent the next twenty years modifying and embellishing the fort.
