Gupta Empire, Chandra Gupta II (375-415 AD), Gold Dinar, 'Lion-slayer' type, Altekar Class I ('lion combatant'), 7.69g. Obv: King wearing tunic and leggings, shooting at a lion to right with strung bow; Brahmi legend Narendra cha… in exergue. Rev: Nimbate goddess seated frontally, with one leg flexed (Lalitasana) over a lion prostrate to left, holding lotus in one hand and a noose in the other. A border suggesting a high-backed throne appears at the back; Brahmi legend Sinhavikrama to right and a Tamgha to left.
Slight flan crack, Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare.
Although the coin generally fits in with Altekar's Class I ('lion-combatant' king), he does not list a variety where the goddess on the reverse appears to sit on a throne, in addition to the lion, which appears to be depicted here as a Lakshana (indication) or Lanchhana (emblem) of the image, appearing on the base of the Peetha, or the pedestal or the base of the seat (Asana) of the goddess.
