Independent Kingdoms
Auction Date: 17-08-2013
Silver
Maratha Confederacy, Silver Rupee, Mustaqir al-Khilafa Akbarabad (Agra) Mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH 1200/RY 28, with 'dagger' mintmark on reverse, (M&W T1a), (date not listed), 10.54g.
Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
This rupee has been typologically attributed to Ghulam Qadir Rohilla's occupation of Agra in KM. However, the AH-date/RY combination on this coin indicates that it was struck between 9 February 1786 and 24 October 1786, a period in which Agra was under Maratha rule and the Rohilla occupation was still a few months away. This proves that the coins with 'dagger' mint-mark were first issued under Maratha authority.
