Rev: Double-circled 'Sunburst' motif, traces of surrounding symbols visible; traces of the margins of an orb of the 'Ujjain' symbol visible to top left under the rays of the sun, 4.45g.
Very Fine+, Unique.
This coin of Patalatolata is clearly counterstruck on a Satavahana coin, belonging to Siri Satakani, similar to those listed in groups 1, 2 and 3 above. This is crucial to ascertain the chronological placement of Patalatolata, and also of the other rulers whose coins share a typological similarity with his issues. This coin proves that the Satavahanas do not appear to have had a 'free run' in their conquest of Central Maharashtra and Vidarbha – at least one ruler appears to have opposed them and ascertained his own right by counterstriking Satavahana coins. This coin is therefore of stellar historical importance.
