Obv: Elephant walking to right with trunk upraised, an 'Ujjain' symbol above its back, Swastika behind; Brahmi legend …Siri Sataka… inscribed along the right margin; traces of undertype legend Raño Su… visible in the top right hand corner. Rev: Bull with upraised tail, standing facing right, a wheel with arrowed spokes above its back, a triangle-headed standard behind and a 'cockerel-standard' in its front; indistinct traces of undertype visible behind the bull's rump, 7.13g.
About Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare.
This coin is counterstruck on a coin of Suryamitra, a king of Vidarbha who preceded Siri Satakani. The coin thus confirms the presence of Satakani to the West of the realm of king Kharavela, who mentions in his Hathigumpha inscription that his armies marched to the West "without even thinking about Satakani". The coin therefore corroborates the inscriptional detail and is historically significant. One such coin was published by Ajaya Mitra Shastri, in 'Nidhi', vol. 1, 1990.
