Lot No.343
AUC21
Mughals
Auction Date: 07-08-2015
Gold
Akbar (1556-1605 AD), Gold Heavy Mohur, Ujjain Mint, AH 996, 12.60g.
Very Fine+, Extremely Rare.
Mohurs struck to the heavy standard corresponded to 10-rupees as per Abu'l Fazal's record in Ain-i- Akbari. They are much rarer than the 9- rupee Mohurs. No gold is reported for Ujjain mint during Akbar's reign. Both these aspects make this coin a remarkable specimen. The mint-name appears to read al-Zarb Ujjain and the use of definitive article in the mint-name is attested in only one other mint in Akbar's coinage, which is Bang.
