Post-Gupta Bengal, 'Samatata' region, Gold Dinar imitating Gupta coins design, attributed to ruler of Assam, Mainamati- Comylla region Bhaskara Varman (600-650 AD), 5.73g. Obv: Stylized 'archer' king, standing holding a strung bow, Conch standard to left and indistinct object above; Brahmi legend Shri Kumara in two lines below the hand that holds the bow. Rev: Stylized representation of a goddess, pseudo-inscriptions to the right.
Very Fine+, Very Rare.
Bhaskara Varman was the last and most illustrious ruler of the Varman dynasty of ancient Kamarupa Kingdom. He held the title 'Shri Kumara'. He came to power after his brother Supratisthita Varman had died. This coin was struck during an expeditionary campaign into Eastern Bengal, when Bhaskara Varman allied with Harshavardhana against Shashanka, king of Gauda. He died without an heir and was
succeeded by Salasthambha, who established the Mlechchha dynasty.
