Lot No.609
AUC20
East India Company
Auction Date: 12-04-2015
Silver
East India Company? Silver Rupee with inscriptions in a Western language rendered in Farsi script, circa late 17th century AD, 11.58g.
Several nicks on reverse, Very Fine, Very Rare.
The rupees have been offered as issues of the English East India Company, struck in Bombay in the name of Charles II? The coins show a similarity with British issues of William and Mary in terms of execution, but the legends have not yet been satisfactorily read. It is quite likely that they are issues of the BEIC from a mint different from Bombay, or the issues of a different European mercantile company, that operated on the Western Coast of India.
