Kuras of Kolhapur, Copper coin of 'Maharathi Kura' (c.50-60AD), 5.92g. Obv: Strung bow and arrow in the center, Brahmi legend (Ma)harathisa Ku(ra)... reading anticlockwise outwards around. Rev: Six-arched hill, wavy line below and traces of a triangle-headed symbol to left.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
The Kuras, who ruled in South-Western Maharashtra and Karnataka, emerged as an independent political entity in mid-1st century AD when the Satavahana power waned under the Kshaharata advance. They initially struck coins with legend mentioning only the family name and the feudatory title. This coin belongs to that early period, when regional assertion of Kura power was limited and cautious.
