Independent Kingdoms
Auction Date: 12-04-2015
Silver
Maratha Confederacy? / Indo-Danish?, Silver Rupee, Arkat Mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, RY 13, 11.29g.
Very Fine+, Very Rare.
Jansen produced evidence from Danish records that the mint at Tranquebar was active in producing 'Arcot' rupees in the date run seen on these rupees. He therefore listed the issue as an 'Indo-Danish' rupee. However, the provenance patterns of coins of this type indicate that it was current in Southern Deccan an area far away from Tamil Nadu and the general style of execution is also not similar to 'Arcot' rupees of the Coromandel Coast. It is possible that this is a Maratha issue with pseudo-mint name 'Arkat'.
