RY Ahd corresponds to 1759-1760, counting from the assassination of Alamgir II and the subsequent proclamation by Shah Alam II as the new king, notwithstanding the fact that the Wazir who murdered Alamgir had installed Shah Jahan III on the throne. The year 1760 was of a political upheaval in Delhi. It saw the city being occupied twice, first by the Durranis and then by the Marathas, who deposed Shah Jahan III in October to declare Shah Alam II as the legitimate ruler. But soon afterwards they left Delhi to seek finances and were defeated by the Afghans at Panipat in January 1761. This coin dates to this tumultuous period, and it is not certain who might have issued it. However, it does not appear to be an issue of the imperial mint of Shahjahanabad, which was in Maratha hands till their eventual retreat from Delhi in late January 1761.
