Sultanates
Auction Date: 12-04-2015
Silver
Sultans of Sind, Saif al-Din al-Hasan Qarlugh (1239-1249 AD), Silver Tanka, similar to G&G SS10, 10.15g. Obv: Shahada followed by the name of Caliph al-Mustansir Billah Amir al-Mumineen. Rev: Within circle Arabic legend Saif al- Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar al-Hasan Qarlugh; in margins, Hizz al-Zarb Fi Mansurah?/Kuraman? followed by
date.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
G&G list a coin of this type with a different marginal legend which begins Zarb Hizz al-Dirham… The calligraphy of the inscription is also of an 'angular' kind, closer to Kufic prevalent to the West and North of Sind. As G&G have remarked, some coins of al-Hasan Qarlugh might have been struck in Kuraman, when he made an incursion into Sind from Ghazna. This is perhaps one such coin.
