Lot No.78
AUC19
Ancient India
Auction Date: 21-12-2014
Lead
Western Kshatrapas, Kshaharata Dynasty, Hill type Lead Coin of Mahakshatrapa Nahapana from Sopara/North Konkan region (70-78 AD), 1.15g. Obv: Three dotted hill in centre, Brahmi legend …Mahakhatapa… around. Rev: 'Ujjain' symbol on reverse.
Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
This type of Kshatrapa coin is being noticed for the first time. Typologically it fits in with Satavahana types with legends 'Satakani' and 'Pulumavi' reported from the site of Sopara. While the title 'Mahakshatrapa' is clear, the name of the title holder is not visible. Curiously the reverse symbol shows clear Satavahana affinity. Judging from the typology there is little doubt that the issuer must have been either Nahapana, or another local holder who was chronologically very close to him.
