Auction Date: 16-08-2014
Gold
Gupta Empire, Chandra Gupta II (375-415AD), Gold Dinar of 'Archer' type, Altekar Class II, var. A. Obv: Nimbate king, standing holding an arrow in one hand and a strung bow in the other; Garuda standard and crescent in left field and Brahmi legend Chandra below the arm holding bow. Rev: Goddess Lakshmi seated on lotus, holding a lotus in one hand and a noose in the other, Brahmi legend Shri Vikramah to right and a Tamgha to left. Graded as EF45 by ICG.
Very Rare.
The depiction of the king on obverse of 'archer'-type coins is usually in full profile standing posture. On this coin, however, the king appears be depicted as a half profile, with parts of the face beyond the nose clearly visible. This is unusual and as such might be classified as a new sub-variety of Altekar's Class II, variety A.
