Copper
Kushans/Huns?, an enigmatic Copper Coin with bilingual inscription on obverse (400-500 AD), 4.66g. Obv: King seated wearing crown with diadem having long flowing ribbon tags; Brahmi legend Devaputra… to right, and below it Bactrian inscription Shao? Rev: Ardokhsho/Lakshmi seated with cornucopia in one hand and a lotus in the other.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
This enigmatic coin bears a curious mixture of Kushan, Hun and Gupta designs. With inscriptions like Devaputra and Shao it ought to be a Kushan issue, but the depiction and the type is similar to one issued by Hun king Narendraditya and the goddess on the reverse shows distinct similarity with that on some coins of Samudra Gupta. The coin presently remains unattributed but it is a very interesting piece, fitting in at the cusp of three major dynastic tradtions.
