City-states issue, Alloyed Copper Coin of 'Tripuri' (250 BC), 8.49g. Obv: Elephant walking to right, a triangle-headed standard in its front; Brahmi legend Tipuri engraved upside down below. Rev: Open cross symbol with three-arched hill with crescent placed sideways next to it; Brahmi legend Tipuri engraved.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
It is evident that the 'elephant' type succeeded the uniface 'hill and cross' type and it is counterstruck on its plain reverse, making it the new obverse. The type is very rare and has been published in the Numismatic Digest.
