Roman Empire, Gold Aureus of Augustus (27BC-14AD), Lugdunum (Lyons) Mint, RIC 206, Chisel-mark on obverse, 7.89g. Obv: Laureate head of emperor to right, abbreviated Latin legend CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE around. Rev: Two princes, Gaius and Lucius, both togate, standing facing and resting hands on shield; behind each, shield and spear; abbreviated Latin legend in exergue - AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PR[INC IVV]ENT, below the podium CL CAESARES.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
The chisel-mark on obverse suggests the coin had arrived in India via the Indo-Roman trade and tested for its genuineness by ancient Indian money-changers before it was circulated.
