Gupta Empire, Heavy Gold Dinar of Chandra Gupta II (c. 375-415AD) or III (post-450AD), 'Archer' type, Altekar Class II var. 'O' (unlisted with dagger in the sash), 8.16g. Obv: Nimbate king standing holding a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other, wearing dhoti and a sash around the waist; a dagger placed in the sash. Brahmi legend Chandra below the hand holding the bow and a Garuda-standard behind. Rev: Goddess Lakshmi seated cross-legged on lotus, holding lotus in one hand and a noose in the other; traces of Brahmi legend Shri Vikramah in the right field, and a Tamgha near the goddess' head to the left.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
Heavy weight Dinars bearing the name of Chandra Gupta are confined to the Eastern regions of the Empire. A variety with dagger in the sash is extremely rare. According to some scholars, the heavier weight of these coins and the similarity they bear with later Gupta coins suggest that they were issued by a king named 'Chandra Gupta III' who ruled in the East during the post-Kumara Gupta period.
