Imperial Magadhan punch-marked Silver Karshapana coin, five obverse marks including 'standing human figure holding a staff' with a bold reverse mark comprising of an elephant, 'Ujjain' symbol, and a row of small 'taurines' (GH Series VI-b, no. 566), 3.04g.
Very Fine, Rare.
Coins of this type, although attributed to the 'Asoka and successors' and dated to c. 270-150 BC by Gupta-Hardaker , are likely to be reissued 'Karshapanas' by applying the bold reverse mark. They are probably the earliest representation of the 'Ujjain symbol' in North India.
