Auction Date: 15-03-2013
Copper
Mathura, Satrapal coinage, 'Gajalakshmi' type copper unit of Kshatrapa Kharahostes, 2.83g. Obv: standing goddess with Brahmi legend (Kha)ta(pa)sa Kharahostasa. Rev: goddess Gajalakshmi standing between two elephants bathing her, unpublished in Senior and Mitchiner; unique so far.
Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
The inscription on the famous Mathura lion-pillar 'reliquary-capital' suggests the name of Kharahostes as an overlord over the family of Kshatrapas ruling at Mathura. However, there was no numismatic substantiation of this fact known as yet. This unique coin provides that important piece of evidence.
