Gold
Gold repousse pendant, Gupta period, c. 5th century AD, Gujarat region, depicting a cock facing left with a standard
attached with a banner in its front. Both motifs enclosed within a double ornamental borders, 5.57g.
Extremely Fine, Unique.
The depiction of the cock and the standard suggests this object was associated with the cult of Karttikeya, the God of War and a son of Lord Shiva. It was probably a part of a jewel that was worn as 'protection charm' by a warrior. The execution of the motifs and designs is of a superb artistic quality befitting the reputation of the Gupta period as an epoch marking the flourish of high art in ancient Indian history.
