Rohilla Chieftaincies, Silver Rupee in the name of Shah Alam II, Muradabad Mint AH1181/RY9, letter 'noon' next to left of RY. Countermarked 'Ra'ij' in hexafoil on reverse.
Very Fine, Very Rare.
The Rohilla issues of 1760-1775 are sometimes found countermarked with 'Raij' (= 'current'). Most such coins have a provenance in the Durrani Empire. It is likely that these were part of tributes sent to Durrani kings by Rohilla Afghans of India. The countermark suggests they were put in use 'afresh' at a later date and no discounts were to be applied in their circulation.
