Nawabs of Bengal, Itimad ud-Daula Mir Qasim (1760-1763), Silver Rupee, in the name of Shah Alam II, Munger Mint, AH 1176/RY 4, 11.57g. Obv: poetic couplet for Shah Alam II. Rev: formulaic 'Julus' inscription with mint-name 'Munger' fully visible at the bottom. Historically very important coin.
Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare.
In 1761, the Nawab of Bengal moved his capital from Murshidabad to Munger (Monghyr). He soon fell out with the British who avoided paying taxes due to him. A war broke out and an army was sent from Calcutta to Monghyr. The town fell to the British in October 1763. There is some debate about whether this rare issue could be a British attempt to run a mint at Monghyr. But the coins clearly bear
AH1176, which ended in July 1763, almost three months before the British took charge of Monghyr. It is therefore more likely that they are the Nawab's issues, apparently struck for financing the war.
