Obv: nominative legend of Ahmad Shah Bahadur and AH date. Rev: 'Julus' formula, RY with mint name at top.

Safdar Jang succeeded his uncle and father-in-law Saadat Khan as the Nawab of Awadh in 1739. Through his constant support of the weak emperor Muhammad Shah, he was appointed as the Wazir of the Empire towards the end of the emperor's reign. Muhammad Shah's successor Ahmad Shah Bahadur, however, had his own favorite - Khoja Javid Khan, who became a rival to Safdar Jang. In 1749, the year in which this coin was struck, Javid Khan attempted to murder Safdar Jang but he escaped. He then left Delhi and returned to Faizabad, his capital, also known as 'Akhtarnagar'. No other coin of 'Akharnagar Awadh' mint, in the name of Ahmad Shah Bahadur is yet reported. This plausibly marks Safdar Jang's return to Faizabad after the Javid Khan debacle. Safdar Jang subsequently spent money on campaigns against the Rohillas who had become an emerging power in provinces bordering on the West of Awadh. This new rivalry lasted for a long time, till the end of the 18th century.
