Akbar (1556-1605) - silver rupee, 'Ilahi' type with ornamental borders, Agra mint, Khurdad (Gemini), Ilahi 47, with additional word denomination 'Rupiyah', KM 94.6, Zeno# 317504. NGC XF Details, Edge filing, Exceedingly rare.
One of the finest known specimen.
During RYs 47 and 48 of Akbar, the mint at Agra issued an unusual series of coins which had denominations inscribed on them. So far, coins with denominational terms 'Rupiyah', 'Darb' and 'Charan' are known and these names are in accordance with the information quoted in the 'Ain-i Akbari for coins of one, half and quarter rupees. This was the first instance in which the word 'Rupiyah' ever occurred on a coin. Khurdad being the third month of the Ilahi calendar, coins dated in this month were for a long considered the earliest instance of the word 'Rupiyah' appearing on a coin. However, now coins of the preceding month Ardibihisht have also surfaced. Similar coin was sold in our auction 45 (2023), lot no. 173 at hammer Rs 9,50,000.
