AUC18 Lot No : 134

Akbar (1556-1605 AD), A very enigmatic Silver coin dated AH 965 and struck to a 'Tanka' standard, weighing 10.82g. Obverse bears the Shahada and reverse has the full name of Akbar, Jalal al-Din Muhammad Akbar Badhshah Ghazi. Above the name, there is the date 965, although at this time the number 5 is more likely to be written as ٤ . Above the king's name there are traces of a word which appears to end in -Ganw, written as گا نو . This ending is usually seen for mints like Chatgaon (Chittagong), Sunargaon or Satgaon. The style and calligraphy of the coin also suggests a Bengal origin. In AH 965 there was hardly any Mughal presence in Bengal, but it is possible that a Mughal partisan might have issued it. There is no doubt that it is an interesting piece particularly with regards to the History of Bengal. Estimate
