The Jeep Cherokee was introduced way back in the 1984 model year as a unibody off-roader but the nameplate actually dates 10 years prior as a two-door version of the body-on-frame Wagoneer. After a 12-year absence from the American market, the Cherokee name returned for 2014 and enjoys high demand.

– Loose fasteners may allow the seats to move, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupants in the event of a crash.

– If the driver’s knee air bag does not properly inflate, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

– Improper assembly of the rear axle may cause axle bearing failure and could result in the separation of a rear axle and wheel.

– A defective differential pinion shaft may exist which can come in contact with the drive pinion gear, causing rear wheel lock-up.
4.) Steering, Column Shaft Upper (issued October 1984). Models affected: 1985.Campaign #84V122000
– Improperly tightened bolt on steering shaft allows the connector on the shaft to slip. Steering movements will not be transmitted to the gear box.
5.) Throttle Linkages and Control (issued November 1984). Models affected: 1985.Campaign #84V138000
– Vehicles may have an improperly secured plastic module (ecell timer) that could drop down and become jammed under the accelerator pedal.

– May have an improperly connected fuel line fitting which could become disconnected and cause gasoline to be spilled.

– A stud may have been installed on top of the intake manifold of engine that could contact the fuel supply hose.

– Contact at full jounce may cause the brake tube to collapse and restrict the hydraulic brake fluid pressure to the left rear brake.
11.) Brakes – Hydraulics, Lines, Hoses, Non-Metallic (issued April 1991). Models affected: 1990 – 1991. Campaign #91V063000
– Detachment of the hose from the abs system causes the loss of the abs function and hydraulic brake assist, leaving only manual brakes.
12.) Brakes – Hydraulics, Lines, Fittings (issued October 1991). Models affected: 1989 – 1990. Campaign #91V003000
– Contamination of the hydraulic fluid can cause malfunctioning of the anti-lock brake system; low pressure hose leakage causes loss of brake fluid and also results in corrosion and failure of the master cylinder snap ring, resulting complete brake failure.
13.) Air Bag, Driver (issued March 1995). Models affected: 1995. Campaign #95V057000.
– This condition will cause the air bag to not deploy in the event of a vehicle accident increasing the potential for personal injury.
14.) Emergency Parking Brake (issued September 1995). Models affected: 1995. Campaign #95V172000
– The parking brake handle release button can separate from the parking brake handle assembly, causing the parking brake to be inoperative.
15.) Electrical System, Fuse & Receptacle (issued October 1995). Models affected: 1996. Campaign #95V193000
16.) Anti-Lock Braking System (issued December 1996). Models affected: 1989 – 1991. Campaign #96V260000
– The antilock brake system (abs) hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear which could cause pump-motor deterioration.
17.) Seat Belts, Rear (issued March 1997). Models affected: 1996. Campaign #97V040000.
– In the event of a crash, the vehicle occupant would not be properly secured.
18.) Steering Gear (issued April 1997). Models affected: 1993 – 1996. Campaign #97V069000
– During assembly of the frame, a fillet weld that joins the inner steering gear attachment reinforcement to the frame rail, was omitted.
19.) Acceleration / Pedal Misapplication (issued May 1997). Models affected: 1984 – 1995. Campaign #97I002000
– A safety improvement campaign by the agency. Drivers can mistakenly step on the accelerator pedal when they intend to step on the brake pedal. Dealers will install a shift interlock on the automatic transmission of these vehicles.

– The reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.

– Water and/or road salt in the proximity of the air bag control module could lead to corrosion.
